Or, she very much is aware of beautiful lesbians but can’t bring herself to admit it…

She has explained before that fundies look frumpy as hell.

Yeah but not usually in the same way. I very much doubt anyone would look at the Maxwells mid-frumper era, or any of the Duggars in that period and think "oh must be gay". Conversely I can't see people looking at your random woman dressed down in loose clothing at the shops and thinking "obviously a fundamentalist." There's often an element of performative piety with Christian fundamentalists (not always granted), because otherwise how would we know how much better they are?

(Having said that - put Teri Maxwell in the Pacific Northwest and I admit my probable assumptions about her would probably shift. Then again I still wouldn't assume she was as fundamentalist as she is from seeing her in the supermarket in Kansas so...)

I think Shoshanna and James didn’t actually have a real wedding. I think they just wanted to have sex so they had their own type of wedding in the woods or something.

They had three weddings- two were symbolic and one was legal

Shoshanna, sweetie, if you want me to shop in the ladies' department you need to get in touch with the fashion industry and convince them to produce women's stuff that actually fits me. And then you have to not either shame me for having noticeable boobage or for wearing wide, shapeless garments. Give me durable clothes that aren't produced in sweatshops by girls that ought to be in school, out of toxin-laden materials. Give me options. Until then you can kiss my mens' shorts.

And POCKETS! The pockets in women's clothes - if they even exist - aren't even big enough to securely carry a single tampon.

Shoshanna doubles down on the crazy.

CrazyShoshanna.thumb.png.7e38c0977aedcf6df3df9bf54c788f78.png

Like her godawful poetry, Shoshannaʻs IG soliloquy is rambling, disjointed, and very confusing.

A tl;dr - fundie Christian women who dress badly cause their husbands to look at porn, make 50% of their daughters question their sexuality, and just generally go against the Bible. Oh, and once more we hear how to identify "lesbians" by their poor fashion choices. 🙄

Hard to believe someone is this fucking stupid.

Meanwhile, Shalom got back to TN and is now getting her 16 yo daughter ready to go to Mexico and be a caretaker for Justin.

I thought the covenant marriage was recognised as a legal marriage in Tennessee? (Honestly of all the things I never thought I'd say "I'm finding marriage confusing right now" has to be up there.)

But... she just told us lesbians and dowdily dressed fundie women were indistinguishable?? What are you trying to say here Shoshanna, that porn is fashion driven?

I think it's not recognised for taxation purposes (hence the third marriage plus their accountants/lawyers needing cardiac care when they realised) but it is recognised as a legal marriage. I think state marriage is easier to split up in though, so... another weirdly good reason to get legally married?

Technically, "covenant" marriages are state-licensed marriages that require the participants to commit to staying married for the rest of their lives - till death do them part. Currently, only 3 states - AR, AZ & LA - have covenant marriages. Common-law marriages are recognized in a few more states but do not include a state-issued license. The link has lists of states where common-law marriages are currently recognized - TN is not one of them.

The "covenant marriage," or wedding #2, that James & Shoshanna had was some bullshit ceremony that Mike Pearl invented but that explicitly did not include a TN marriage license, as he bragged in his account of the event:

Quote

None of my daughters or their husbands asked the state of Tennessee for permission to marry. They did not yoke themselves to government. It was a personal, private covenant, binding them together forever—until death. So when the s[*******]s have come to share in the state marriage licenses, which will eventually be the law, James and Shoshanna will not be in league with those perverts.

Technically many religious people refer to weddings as "covenants". Covenant marriage from a legal sense are a special license that is only a thing in 3 states. From a spiritual and non-legal sense Christians offer refer to marriage as a Covenant.

As for Shoshanna, the point of the second ceremony was a public commitment.

It's convenient for Michael Pearl to not have kids legally married. Then he can technically say his son Gabriel was never divorced, even though he had a "wife/partner" who is the mother of his first three kids.

I don't know why I am finding it so hilarious that of the three times she got married only one was recognised legally where she lives (for some reason i thought TN recognised covenant marriages too). From a state perspective she got together with someone, lived with them for quite a while, they got married, they broke up and divorced.

If they'd broken up prior to getting married that would certainly have affected the settlements.

In a technical sense, yes, but I'm sure what he meant was "We did it so different/godly that they will be together til death." Which did not happen. And after James and Shoshanna got their legal marriage license, that claim was null and void anyway.

We have a fundie somewhere covenant marriage was or is legal. It has been years but I remember the conversations. Maybe Maranatha who was parceled off as a teen to an adult?

I was just thinking…. Shoshanna mentioned the lesbian group North Face. And now I’m thinking of the Maxwell girls and their North Face puffer vest era. I wonder if Shoshanna was thinking of the Maxwells when shitting on frumpy fundies.

She also said the word uniboob. Sorry Shoshanna but I refuse to wear wire bras anymore. And my bras are much more comfortable but yes, I often have a uniboob. Sorry it offends you Sho.

Jill and Jessa Duggar and probably Jinger.  It's likely JB tried to get all his kids who married in AR to do covenant marriages.  The partners can still get divorced by establishing residency and filing in another state or following the somewhat longer covenant divorce rules.  They are more like the1960's rules in many other states with longer periods of separation, counseling, etc.  Divorce is absolutely still possible.

I doubt Shoshanna has the granular knowledge of the Maxwells to note that. The frumper thing was pretty widespread in fundie circles when she was a kid. I know Steve and Michael  Pearl knew each other and fell out but I am not sure the actual families were in enough regular contact for her to have the Maxwell girls as a reference point for anything.

It definitely wasn't Maranatha. They lived in Texas and it's not practiced there. Jill and Derick and probably many of the other Duggars. Not J**h and Anna as Florida doesn't have Covenant Marriage. Covenant Marriages allow for divorce when one spouse is convicted of a felony!

Louisiana does have Covenant Marriages, and current Speaker of the US House Mike Johnson has one.

I think Mike had a beef with the Maxwells at some point...wasn't his article about cloistered homeschoolers seemingly directed at them?

And as for bras, my Dr actually recently told me she doesn't recommend underwire for anyone, because they don't allow natural movement of the breasts. She was clearly not raised in purity/modesty culture or she'd know that's a feature, not a bug.

I don't think he's anti-homeschooling or that was the problem.

One of the interesting things about Pearl is that he believes at 18, people are responsible for their own lives. He preaches to train a child up is to set them up for life, (which yes young indoctrination can last a lifetime). However he thinks at 18 they should be autonomous and making their decisions.  This explains why most of the Pearl kids turned out pretty wild.

It also puts at odds with most fundies, including the Maxwells, but also the Duggars, the Bates, etc.

He’s pretty similar to Steve Anderson in those beliefs. They actually have quite a bit in common since they are both into beating children. Although Zoo absolutely HATES Mike.

Really? I thought Steve was anti-corporal punishment and more into mental manipulation.

He never talks about that in his Dad column, so I'm not sure I believe that.
